The most important shift in STEM education isn’t a new gadget — it’s a change in verb. For decades, students studied science. The students who will thrive in the coming decades are the ones who do it: build the circuit, write the code, fly the drone, test the hypothesis, and present the result. That’s the model every WES Forum program is built on.
Why Hands-On Wins
Research and plain experience agree: students retain what they build far better than what they’re told. A 3-hour workshop where a student assembles a working kit creates something a lecture can’t — the identity shift from “I’m learning about engineering” to “I’m an engineer.” Once a young person believes they’re the kind of person who builds things, curiosity does the rest.
The WES Forum STEM Model
- 3-hour workshops. Long enough to build something real, short enough for a family weekend. Robotics, drones, electronics, and more.
- DIY assembly kits. Take-home kits extend the learning past the event — the workshop is the spark, the kit keeps it burning.
- Meetups and our online forum. Learning sticks when there’s a community to share it with. Students show off projects, ask questions, and find collaborators.
- Emerging-tech literacy. We introduce students to what’s coming, not just what’s here: AI, quantum computing, drone technology, and the policy questions around them — explained at a level young learners genuinely grasp.
Yes, We Really Do Talk About Quantum Computing
Quantum computing sounds intimidating, but the core ideas — computers that explore many possibilities at once, and the kinds of problems that could transform medicine, materials, and security — can absolutely be taught to curious young minds. Our students won’t need a physics degree to benefit; they’ll need to recognize the opportunity when it arrives in their careers. Very few youth programs anywhere prepare students for that moment. Ours does, on purpose.
